Islamic State suffers double blow as Ramadi falls, leaders killed

U.S.-led forces have killed 10 Islamic State leaders in air strikes, including individuals linked to the Paris attacks, a U.S. spokesman said, dealing a double blow to the militant group after Iraqi forces ousted it from the city of Ramadi.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi planted the national flag in Ramadi after the army retook the city center from Islamic State, a victory that could help vindicate his strategy for rebuilding the military after stunning defeats.
"Over the past month, we've killed 10 ISIL leadership figures with targeted air strikes, including several external attack planners, some of whom are linked to the Paris attacks," said U.S. Army Colonel Steve Warren, a spokesman for the U.S.-led campaign against the Islamist group also known by the acronym ISIL.
"Others had designs on further attacking the West."
One of those killed was Abdul Qader Hakim, who facilitated the militants' external operations and had links to the Paris attack network, Warren said. He was killed in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Dec. 26.

Two days earlier, a coalition air strike in Syria killed Charaffe al Mouadan, a Syria-based Islamic State member with a direct link to Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the suspected ringleader of the coordinated bombings and shootings in Paris on Nov. 13 which killed 130 people, Warren said.
Mouadan was planning further attacks against the West, he added.

Air strikes on Islamic State's leadership helped explain recent battlefield successes against the group, which also lost control of a dam on a strategic supply route near its de facto capital of Raqqa in Syria on Saturday.

"Part of those successes is attributable to the fact that the organization is losing its leadership," Warren said. He warned, however: "It's still got fangs.

Woman electrocuted in hotel room on her birthday

24 year old Funke Balogun, a National Diploma II student of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), was allegedly electrocuted in a hotel bathroom owned by her boyfriend Abolade Adetunji's mother at 30, Balogun Street, Oshodi in Lagos on Sunday December 27th.
According to a report by the Nation, Funke who is a mother of one, was in a relationship with Abolade who just passed from NYSC. According to Funmi, the younger sister of the deceased, Abolade came to pick her sister at their residence on Saturday around 11pm.
“Abolade was in a hurry that night and I told my sister not to go but she picked some of her things and left with him. On Sunday morning around 7, she called and said plans had changed that they were not going to the beach again but to a hotel and since then, we have been trying her mobile line. When she didn’t pick her call, I became worried. That day was her birthday and our mother still called her in the midnight to pray for her. Even, when my mum called Abolade’s mobile line, someone picked and said he forgot his phone and since then his lime has been switched off."
Funmi said when she and some family members went to the hotel to see if they could check on her, they didn’t see her, adding that the receptionist said Adetunji just stepped out and wasn’t with a girl.
“Even when we got to Abolade’s house, we were told he had gone to the beach. Around 8pm on Sunday, my cousin and I went to the hotel again, I sighted blood on the wall and when I asked Abolade’s brother, Bayo where my sister was, he said: ‘at the moment, Funke is dead’; he said it without remorse and was still icing drinks in the freezer. Even when we went to the police station, they said they were not aware of the incident. Is that how my sister will die? She has been dating him for almost a year. He just returned from National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Anambra State. The boy is very proud to the extent that whenever he visited her, he didn’t greet anyone.”she said
When interviewed, Abolade said his girlfriend died of shock.
"‎She was already in the bathroom and I went to meet my brother who was on the same floor with us to get the toothpaste. As I returned to the room, I tried to open the toilet door but it was stiff. As I gained access to the toilet, I met her on the floor with a shower handle on her right hand. When I tried to carry her, I didn’t know what happened until I saw myself on hospital bed.”
His father, Jamiu Adetunji, A. K.A (Yaro), said Abolade’s elder brother called their mother that they needed a doctor.
“Immediately we took them to Geo Medical Centre where Funke eventually gave up. We first took her to General Hospital, Ikeja but she was rejected because there was none of her family members with us. It was later we reported the incident to Akinpelu Police Station where they took the body to Yaba mortuary. I wouldn’t want to kill someone else’s daughter. Funke was my son’s girl friend and I told her to help me monitor his movement because at times he wouldn’t listen and since he talked about her dearly, I felt she was going to inspire him. It is really unfortunate. My son has put me in trouble. Even when they wanted to know the girl’s full name, I pinched my son few times just for him to wake up. I have arrested the electrician that connected light to the building because last Friday, occupants of the building beside the hotel complained of shock in their house and I told the electrician but he refused to come. It was after the incident he came and was arrested. “
The mother of the bereaved, Kehinde Balogun, has remained inconsolable since the day of the incident

"Funke was my first child and she has a three-year-old son. The only reason they live alone is because her school is close to the family house in Oshodi. Why did they kill my beauty? Why? What have I done to deserve this? I wish she listened to her sister that night because she had a dream. I saw my daughter in my sleep this morning telling me she had returned. It is unfortunate. I wish it was a reality. It is a big tragedy because where she died was three houses from where I gave birth to her. I warned her about him but she told me he was okay and assured me everything was fine.” she said amid tears.

N6.08trillion budget: 'Nigeria going the way of Greece' - PDP warns

Read the press statement from the PDP below...

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown more light into why the N6.08 trillion 2016 federal budget presented by President Muhammadu Buhari is a huge fraud, warning that with the proposed N1.84 trillion borrowing, the nation is going the way of Greece.

Speaking with journalists yesterday in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, explained that a breakdown of the N1.84 trillion shows that Nigeria would be borrowing N5 billion a day for the next 365 days, starting from January I, 2016, without corresponding provision for economic production and a clear repayment plan, a scenario that spells doom for the future of the nation.

According to Metuh, “Some people may be wondering why we raised an alarm about the budget. The reason is simple. When we analyzed the budget, we discovered it is a misshapen attempt at a Keynesian economics of applying deficit spending to stimulate growth even when studies have proven that GDP growth rates decrease by over 50% when debt goes from low or moderate to high. But then we know the borrowing here is to pay huge campaign debt and fund a political war chest.

"By every standard, this budget is a booby trap against the nation. When you break down the proposed N1.84 trillion borrowing, you discover that it amounts to borrowing N5 billion everyday for the 365 days in 2016. The questions are: for what specific projects are they borrowing N5 billion per day and how do they intend to pay back?

“The President should explain to Nigerians how they intend to pay back the loan. Is it by continuous borrowing to service the interests, and does he intend to accumulate colossal debt for future generations of Nigerians?

"The truth is that this administration cannot justify this proposal. There is no known economy in the world where you can justify borrowing N1.84 trillion without specific projects and precise repayment outline. This is worse still in an oil-driven, mono-economy at a time crude oil is selling at $30 dollars per barrel and is speculated to go down to about $20 dollars or even lower in the next one year. The idea can only come when you diversify the economy and boost production capacity in manufacturing and other critical sectors, a direction, which the budget clearly failed to provide.

"From all indicators, the borrowing will be negative. They are driving us to be like Greece, and to plunge us into unnecessary debt. When the PDP took office in 1999, we achieved the cancellation of inherited debts. This administration, in seeking to accumulate debts, should know that there is no possibility that any country in the world will give us debt cancellation anymore.”

Metuh added, "More importantly, we are really worried about negative economic policies of the present administration and the copying of strategies that failed in other economies. Recall that we had earlier alerted on the negative consequences of the retrogressive foreign exchange controls wherein this government is making it impossible for honest Nigerians to engage in free trade and regulate their personal activities.

“There seems to be the erroneous belief that the controls will create foreign exchange stability or strengthen the Naira by limiting foreign currency outflows. This policy had badly affected other countries in the recent past; including Argentina, whose new government had to reverse the policy to save their economy. Why then are we copying a policy that failed in other countries?

“In practice, the kind of crude controls the Federal Government is implementing have been proven ineffective in preventing capital flight. By limiting the local availability of foreign exchange, the controls have instead increased the demand for foreign exchange, putting greater pressure on the naira and achieving the exact opposite of what the government in its naivety believed would happen.

“The negative impacts of the ill-conceived controls include the hindering of international trade and discouraging of foreign investment. We have seen first-hand the crippling of the private sector in the last six months, upon the implementation of these measures were out. Traders, importers and all manner of businesses are being destroyed as a result of the contrived unavailability of foreign exchange.

The PDP spokesman challenged the Federal Government to a public and open debate on the budget devoid of the sentiments of the APC-controlled National Assembly and who are minded against any cuts in their own allocation.

Stop giving oxygen to Boko Haram insurgency - Lai Mohammed appeals to journalists

Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed has appealed to Nigerian media to stop giving oxygen to Boko Haram by glamorizing their activities. He said this while speaking as a guest on Channels TV.

“Just as I said in my meeting with the newspapers editors in Lagos on the 21st of December, the military has largely met the deadline to defeat Boko Haram, and the military has matched the capacity of terrorists to carry out the attacks they used to.
Of course, I also mentioned that the terrorists will continue to attack such targets as markets, motor parks, entertainment centers and houses of worship; and this is exactly what is going on. We know that in an insurgency, the war does not end in one day. The attack on soft targets will continue, but we also want to appeal to the media to stop giving oxygen to the Boko Haram insurgency. When we glamorize the attacks, it gives the terrorists more life and in a time of insurgency like this, the media also has a role to play, which is not to glamorize the attacks. What is happening is not unexpected; what is happening is what will happen in any insurgency. But the fact of the attack is that Boko Haram has been sufficiently defeated. Boko Haram can no longer take any territory away from us. And if you look at the context, about a year ago, Boko Haram had complete control of 20 out of 37 local governments in Borno state. There were about six local governments in Yobe and about four in Adamawa. If today, Boko Haram is operating from one or two local governments in the entire country, I think the military has largely succeeded in wiping out Boko Haram.”he said

Why I’ve Not Spoken On $2.1bn Arms Deal Scandal – Maku

labaran makuA former Information Minister in the Goodluck Jonathan administration, Mr Labaran Maku, has said he would soon air his “views about everything that is going on” in relation to the $2.1bn arms deal scandal involving ex-National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd).
Maku, who was the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, candidate in the April 11 governorship election in Nasarawa State, also carpeted the state governor, Tanko Al-Makura, for planning to spend N17 billion on an airport project, describing it as an avenue to steal.
According to Maku, “What Lafia needs is an airstrip, where aircraft can land in case some very important personalities may visit the state for one reason or the other.
“For Al-Makura to build N17 billion airport in Kwandare, his village, is not the priority of the people of the state for now.
“The money can be used to establish factories, industries, construct rural roads, provide potable water and electricity to the rural populace.
“There is a high rate of poverty among the people, especially at the grassroots, a problem that has been compounded by lack of access roads, electricity and drinkable water”.
The former Minister, who gave the advice while speaking with journalists in his country home in Wakama, Akun Development Area of the state, therefore, called on the Federal Government and the aviation authority to reverse the construction of an airport in Lafia at this time of economic hardship.
On ongoing probe into the $2.1 billion meant to purchase arms for the Nigerian Armed Forces to combat Boko Haram, Mr. Maku said: “I don’t want to comment on this administration now because I was in the previous government as minister of Information and our voice was all over the nation. Decency requires that I keep quiet and let Nigerians hear other voices. That doesn’t mean I will not say anything, but it is virtually too early for me as a former minister of Information to begin to talk about what is going on at the moment.
“So it is not correct; when you have spoken so long and people have heard your voice, you also withdraw and hear others. I have my views about everything that is going on now. When the time is due, when I have respected public decency, waited and have heard some other Nigerians, I will make my views known.

“But for now, it is too early for me to say anything. The processes that are going on are in the full glare of Nigerians and what I will say is that the media should be very careful. That’s my advice and I will not say anything else”.

My Visit To Dubai Not To Plot Against Buhari, Says Atiku

wpid-ngtrends-atiku.jpg.jpegFormer Vice President Atiku Abubakar, yesterday, denied engaging in acts capable of undermining the administration of President Muhammdau Buhari, saying the speculation that he used the cover of a foreign medical trip to Dubai to host political meetings ahead of 2019, was false.
The All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain, who advised political mischief makers to allow him enjoy his peace, said the agenda of those behind the “sinister propaganda” against him was to drive a wedge between him and the president, in order to cause needless distrust and distractions in the current government.
Reacting to insinuations by what he called “political mischief makers and enemies of unity”, who alleged that he has been hosting political meetings at Burj Al-Arab, Dubai, Mr. Atiku said contrary to the rumours being bandied around by political opponents, he is currently in Dubai with his family for physiotherapy on his injured knee.
In a statement issued by his media office in Abuja on Sunday and signed by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, the Turakin Adamawa said he was embarrassed by the deliberate falsehoods being spread against him by political opponents who are bent on causing distraction for President Buhari at a time all energies should be channelled into helping the President actualise his change agenda.
Describing rumour mongers as “ill-motivated busybodies that don’t wish the country well”, Atiku explained that his medical treatment is his private affairs, which should not be politicized by anybody to achieve sinister objectives.
Former Vice President Atiku, who stressed that he is entitled to enjoy his private life, including the right to attend to his health, without being harassed and lied against by political opponents, said contrary to insinuations, the success of the Buhari administration has been his preoccupation, and that any true APC member should have the same zeal.
According to him, rumour mongers that seek to cause distrust and distraction in Buhari’s government do not mean well for the APC administration.
Mr. Atiku pointed out that with the challenge of providing good governance for the country and creating job opportunities for Nigerians, including reducing the impact of poverty, President Buhari needs all the goodwill and support in this endeavour.
“Whether at home or abroad, the Turaki is preoccupied with his unassailable support to President Buhari and his administration, especially in this critical time, as it works assiduously to turn the fortunes of our dear country around and make Nigeria work for the greater good of Nigerians”, the statement said.
According to Atiku, rumour mongers and mischief makers are toxic to the progress of the APC and the country at large, adding that the campaigns are gone, and therefore, all energies should be constructively devoted to the success of the Buhari administration.

“This is yet another plot of the enemies of our country and democracy to divide, divert attention and distract the APC in its avowed commitment to secure the country, provide jobs for the mass of unemployed youths, build needed critical infrastructure, enthrone a regime of probity and accountability and pull the country out of the economic woods it has been consigned to by locust years of mismanagement”.

It’s Official: Chinese Couples Can Now Have Two Kids

chi
It’s official. From January 1, 2016 China will allow two children for every couple.
Chinese lawmakers rubber-stamped the new legislation Sunday during a session of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, which governs the country’s laws, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
“The state advocates that one couple shall be allowed to have two children,” according to the newly revised Law on Population and Family Planning.
This effectively dismantles the remnants of the country’s infamous one-child policy that had been eased in recent years.
When news of the planned change to the law broke in October, the ruling Communist Party issued the following statement: “To promote a balanced growth of population, China will continue to uphold the basic national policy of population control and improve its strategy on population development.
“China will fully implement the policy of ‘one couple, two children’ in a proactive response to the issue of an aging population.”

Anglican Bishop To Buhari: Extend Corruption Probe To Obasanjo, Abdulsalami, Others

obasanjo-buhariThe Anglican Bishop of Western Izon Diocese, Delta State, Rt. Rev. Edafe Emamezi, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to extend his corruption probe to all living former political office holders for his anti-corruption crusade to the desired result.
The Anglican Bishop, who made the call in his homily yesterday at the diocesan headquarters in Patani, Patani Local Government Area, Delta State, also stressed the need for Nigerians to support the anti-corruption crusade.
The Buhari administration has limited its probe to the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
But Rt. Rev. Emamezi said that the campaign should cover all corrupt politicians who are still alive.
“The love of money and power are the things that are dividing Nigeria”, the Anglican Bishop said.
Emamezi also urged Nigerians to set aside their ethno-religious differences and imbibe the spirit of reconciliation in order for them to be united.

“Nigerians should use this occasion of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ to be on the part of unity through forgiveness and reconstruction”, the Anglican Bishop added.
